Bill Clinton: ‘I Am Here First to Support Barack Obama’
Susan Davis reports from Denver inside the convention hall.
Former President Bill Clinton made the objective of his convention speech tonight clear in his opening words: I am here first to support Barack Obama , he said. And second, Im here to warm up the crowd for Joe Biden .
The 42nd president of the U.S. received the warmest welcome yet of the Democratic convention speakers. He was greeted by about two minutes of sustained applause and cheers of Bill! Bill! Bill! as the delegates in the convention hall waived American flags.
Anticipation was high for Clintons speech as the convention has been punctuated of stories of lingering tensions between the Obama and Clinton camps. Sen. Hillary Clinton has done her part — she offered a rousing address to the convention Tuesday night. Earlier today, she formally released her delegates, and later offered the motion to suspend the roll call vote and nominate Obama by acclamation.
