From his Camp David retreat, President George W. Bush sent condolences to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday for terrorist attacks in Mumbai that have claimed more than 100.
“President Bush spoke this morning by telephone” to the Indian leader, press secretary Dana Perino said. Bush wanted to express “solidarity with the people of India” in the wake of the attacks.
It wasn’t immediately known whether American citizens were among the dead, but authorities in India have said some U.S. citizens and British citizens, particularly, were targets and were among those taken hostage.
Continued violence rattled India’s financial capital Thursday amid explosions and gun attacks overnight. Terrorists took several dozen hostages at two of the city’s most popular hotels for Western business travelers and tourists. Police rescued at least 45 captives from the Oberoi Hotel, the Associated Press reported, and dozens were believed to still be inside.
