Candidates Face Candid Questions on Faith and Failings

Rick Warren’ s Saddleback Valley Community Church gave presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain an enthusiastic reception as they discussed their personal faith, failings and their views on a range of issues. Warren asked each man the same set of questions, allowing for “apples to apples” comparisons, as he put it. Asked for their greatest moral failings, neither man shied away from low points. Obama mentioned his youthful drug use and drinking. McCain cited the failure of his first marriage. On policy issues, Obama defended his support for abortion rights and gay civil unions.
