Clinton Calls for ‘Smart Power’ in Senate Hearing

 
Sen. Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that she intends to revitalize the mission of diplomacy in American foreign policy, calling for a “smart power” strategy in the Middle East and implicitly criticizing the Bush administration for having downgraded the role of arms control. Here, the full text as prepared for delivery at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: Thank you, Senator Schumer, for your generous introduction, and even more for your support and our partnership over so many years. You are a valued and trusted colleague, a friend, and a tribute to the people of New York whom you have served with such distinction throughout your career.
