So is Colin Powell , the Republican military icon and frequent near-candidate, really going to endorse Barack Obama on Sundays Meet the Press? And, for that matter, does Obama actually want Powell firmly in his camp?
The answer to both questions is probably yes
and no.
The ever-cautious Powell will surely pour praise on Obama when he sits down Sunday with NBCs Tom Brokaw . And he will also heap acclaim on fellow Vietnam War vet and Obama rival John McCain . In the end, the bulk of the praiselikely amounting to outright supportwill almost certainly fall to Obama.
On CNN in February, Powell described his ideal candidate as someone who brings…a vision that reaches out to the rest of the world, that starts to restore confidence in America. He said he wanted his pick to be leading a party that is fully in sync with the candidate.
