Conservatives Take Aim at News Media

 
Mary Jacoby reports from St. Paul, Minn., on the Republican convention. John McCain ’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate has helped conservatives get their groove back and has revived their zest for bashing the “elite” media. On a conference call Tuesday morning with elected officials and other campaign surrogates, a McCain staffer asked the supporters to aim their fire at the news media today instead of Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama. Conservative talk radio show host Laura Ingraham took up the talking points when she stood in for Palin at an anti-abortion event hosted by long-time party activist Phyllis Schlafly . The group, RNC for Life, had decided back in May to honor Palin. As late as Monday afternoon, the event’s staffers expected her to still show up. But with her elevation to vice presidential candidate and with a make-or-break speech to give on Wednesday at the convention, Palin bowed out.
