Early Voters Favor Obama, Surveys Show

 
Brad Haynes reports on the presidential race. While Barack Obama has a substantial lead in national polls, early signs suggest he’s built an even bigger lead at the ballot box so far. Polling by SurveyUSA shows support for Obama runs much higher than for his Republican rival, John McCain, among early voters. One review of polls in states with early voting found that Obama’s lead over McCain among those who have already voted ranged from 15 percentage points to as much as 40 percentage points. In five key states – New Mexico, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia and Iowa – polls so far show early voters favor Obama by an average of 23 points. President George W. Bush won those five states. In Georgia, where the secretary of state tracks voter demographics , 37% of the half million early voters so far have been black, while just 30% of Georgians are black.
