House Republicans Pick Up Two Democratic-Held Seats

 
Brad Haynes reports on election results. In an otherwise rough night, congressional Republicans can enjoy a glimmer of good news from Louisiana’s 6th District – the party’s first confirmed pickup of the evening. GOP State senator Bill Cassidy handily beat Democratic Rep. Don Cazayoux , whose win in a May special election bolstered Democratic hopes for this fall. With a stronger candidate and boosted turnout from the general election, the GOP had better luck this time in a district that went for President Bush by 19% in 2004. Cazayoux was also dogged in the race by primary rival Michael Jackson , a black state representative who divided the district’s substantial African American vote by running as an independent. Cassidy captured about half of all votes, almost dead even with the combined total of Cazayoux and Jackson, who took roughly 39% and 11% respectively.
