President-elect Barack Obama will hold a press conference today in Chicago at 11:40 EST where he is expected to name New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson as his nominee for secretary of commerce. Richardson served as energy secretary in the Clinton administration.
The New Mexico governor is the latest former Democratic primary rival to receive a post in the Obama administration. On Monday, Obama announced Hillary Clinton will be his nominee for secretary of state.
Richardson has long been viewed as a contender for a cabinet post. Despite his personal and political ties to the Clintons, he endorsed Obama in the primary in a move that hurt his relationship with Bill Clinton in particular, who personally lobbied for his support.
Richardson is also one of the Democratic Party’s best known Hispanic leaders, and his selection is further proof of the diversity expected from the Obama cabinet.
The live blog will start shortly.
