McCain Makes Amends for Blowing Off Letterman

Laura Meckler reports from New York City on the presidential race: Sen. John McCain made amends for blowing off David Letterman last month. And, as the late-night TV interview grew serious, he defended the selection of his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , and her statement that Democrat Barack Obama “pals around with terrorists.” The interview, taped late this afternoon, is to be broadcast tonight. Sen. McCain also suggested that Gov. Palin would soon be on a late-night show of her own soon — “Saturday Night Live,” which has made relentless fun of her. “Probably get more of an audience than our debate did,” Sen. McCain predicted. Upon arrival to the “Late Show with David Letterman” set, Sen. McCain joked that he had asked his son now serving in the Marine Corps to FedEx his flak jacket in preparation for the show. “So what happened?” Mr. Letterman asked, referencing his decision to “suspend” his campaign to return to Washington to help fix the ...
