Michelle Obama Stresses Her Roots in Convention Speech

Michelle Obama re-introduced herself to voters Monday as a caring mother from a working-class background who values family above all else, as she delivered a much-anticipated headline address on the first day of the Democratic National Convention. “We want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them,” she said. She spoke after a video tribute played in which her family members and friends praised her as a thoughtful dynamo who has balanced pursuing a career with being a mother. The speech was an opportunity for Obama to not only showcase her husband’s personal side, but also quiet charges from Republicans that she is somehow unpatriotic. (link)
