Missouri Rep. Roy Blunt to Run for Senate

 
Susan Davis reports on politics. Missouri Republican Roy Blunt is looking to trade up. The 7th-term lawmaker announced today that he is giving up his House seat to run for the Senate seat being vacating by Republican Sen. Kit Bond , who is retiring next year. “The Senate is where the real battles will be fought for America’s future. It is where every voice must be heard,” Blunt said a statement posted on his new campaign Web site. The lawmaker is attending a series of rallies around his home state today touting his candidacy. Blunt, 59 years old, was widely expected to get in the race after former Republican Sen. Jim Talent announced he would not run. Blunt stepped down from his House leadership position as whip following further GOP losses in the 2008 election. Blunt could face at least one Republican primary challenge from former state treasurer Sarah Steelman. The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Wednesday that she is still mulling a bid.
