President Barack Obama hand-delivered a letter to Pope Benedict XVI from ailing Sen. Ted Kennedy during a private meeting at the Vatican today.
White House aide Denis McDonough confirmed that Obama and the pope discussed the Massachusetts Democrat, a member of one of the most prominent Catholic families in the U.S. The president asked the pope to pray for Kennedy, who was diagnosed last year with incurable brain cancer.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One that Obama called Kennedy after the meeting and spoke for approximately 10 minutes before the president boarded the plane for Ghana, the final stop of his overseas trip.
“The contents of the letter were not known to anybody that I know of except Senator Kennedy,” Gibbs said.
