The Bush doctrine appears to be alive and well at least according to President George W. Bush .
In a speech on his military legacy, Bush offered a defense of the doctrine, which calls for eliminating safe havens for terrorists and says America neednt wait for threats to fully materialize before striking. The doctrine was used to justify the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Now theres growing pressure to move more forcefully in the lawless tribal regions of Pakistan, where terrorists are dug in. The U.S. already has made significant use of drones to launch attacks there.
In a speech Tuesday to cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Bush suggested the U.S. should be able to protect its troops in Afghanistan from attacks emanating from Pakistan.
