Republicans Cheer Bush

 
Susan Davis reports from St. Paul, Minn., on the presidential race. Media reports suggested John McCain would be better off when President George W. Bush canceled his Monday appearance here due to Hurricane Gustav, but Republicans offered their most enthusiastic response of the night when the president appeared live via satellite to boost his 2000 Republican primary rival. “He’s not afraid to tell you when he disagrees. Believe me—I know,” Bush quipped to crowd laughter. Bush praised McCain for his support of the 2007 troop surge strategy in Iraq. “He put his presidential campaign at risk. He told them he’d rather lose an election than see his country lose a war. That’s the kind of vision and courage we need in the next commander-in chief.” Bush also recalled the 2001 terrorist attacks and the challenges the nation faces when he reviews threat assessments and intelligence reports. “I know the hard choices that fall solely on the president,” he said, adding that McCain “is ready to ...
