Roberta McCain Brings a Lighter Moment to Campaign

 
Laura Meckler reports from Downington, Pa., on the presidential race. The air blows a little lighter on the McCain campaign whenever the candidate’s 96-year-old mother, Roberta McCain , is along, and today was no exception. Washington Wire always looks forward to new stories about and from Mrs. McCain, who is as spry and sharp as can be. Today’s moment came courtesy of Sen. Joe Lieberman , the Connecticut Democrat-turned-independent who is backing the Republican presidential candidate. Speaking first at a rally outside Philadelphia, Lieberman said that he and his wife stayed on the same hotel floor as Mrs. McCain during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., early in September. “One night we saw Mrs. McCain going over a little early to the convention. I walked by the elevator, I saw her and said, `Mrs. McCain, you look beautiful.’ And she turns and looks right up at me and says, `Are you trying to pick me up?’” Mrs. McCain, standing behind him on stage, remained silent, ...
