Roland Burris: ‘I am the Junior Senator for the State of Illinois’

Illinois Democrat Roland Burris vowed his commitment to appear in the Senate next week despite assertions from Democratic leaders that they will not recognize his appointment by scandal-tainted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to fill President-elect Barack Obama ’s seat. “The governor’s appointment is legal, and I am the junior senator for the state of Illinois,” Burris told “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer ” in an interview this evening. Fifty sitting U.S. senators warned Blagojevich in a letter shortly after the governor’s December arrest–on charges that include using pay-to-play tactics to sell the vacant seat for personal gain–that they would use their authority to block an appointment if the governor exercised his authority while facing criminal charges. To the surprise and anger of Democrats, Blagojevich tapped Burris, a former Illinois attorney general, on Tuesday to fill the vacancy. The appointment has the ... (link)
