Pressure is building up for Republican senators who face re-election in 2010. None more so than Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning .
Five other GOP senators already have announced their retirements, and Bunning faces questions about his readiness to run again.
Today, Kentucky Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo , a top-tier Democratic candidate, announced his plans to challenge the 77-year-old Bunning after coming within 23,000 votes of defeating him in 2004. When Bunning raised less than $28,000 in campaign funds during the last reporting period, the GOP establishment began questioning his preparation for a 2010 bid.
The grumbling only intensified after Bunning didnt show up for the busy first week of Congress this year, citing a family vacation without providing further details.
