After a rapid succession of Senate Republican retirements, campaign chief John Cornyn of Texas told reporters today that he does not expect any more of his GOP colleagues to announce they won’t run in 2010.
I dont anticipate further retirements, Cornyn said, adding, Of course, I cant read minds. Cornyn said he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky have made it clear to their colleagues that if they want to retire, they need to announce sooner rather than later in order to allow the campaign operation to recruit strong candidates and raise funds.
The Texas senator offered a broad outline of an ambitious makeover strategy for the campaign operation heading into the 2010 cycle, including recruiting candidates to challenge every Senate Democrat up for re-election next year, building a national fund-raising infrastructure, and using technology to improve communication, fund-raising, and grassroots strategies.
