Through Aide, Obama Says Blagojevich Should Resign

Susan Davis reports on politics. President-elect Barack Obama ’s communications director Robert Gibbs told reporters today that Obama believes home state Gov. Rod Blagojevich should resign his office following his Tuesday arrest. “Yes. The president-elect agrees with Lt. Governor [Pat] Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois,” Gibbs said. Asked if the state should use a special election to determine Obama’s Senate successor, Gibbs said state legislators should “consider the issue and put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the people of Illinois.” The general assemly is expected to reconvene next week to debate legislation to provide for a special election.
