Voters in Dearborn, Mich., Worry About Iraq War, Economy

 
Kate Linebaugh reports from Dearborn, Mich., on Election Day. For Abbas al-Watan the choice was simple. The 41-year-old father of six believes Republican Sen. John McCain would help his homeland, Iraq, more than Democratic Sen. Barack Obama . Al-Watan was won over by McCain’s experience in the military and commitment to winning the Iraq war. “We don’t have enough security over there now. John McCain will rebuild my country and help my people,” he said. “If we pull out there could be a massacre.” Al-Watan came to the U.S. in 1994 as a refugee and now lives in Dearborn, Mich., which has a large Arab-American community. He was recently laid off by the Greektown casino and is looking for work. His view seemed to be in the minority at the Maples Elementary School polling place. Nazih Fawas , a 40-year-old gas station owner and immigrant from Lebanon, voted for Obama. “We need change because the economy has gone straight in the sewer,” ... (link)
