Democratic Rep. Tom Udall won the New Mexico seat that had been held by Republican Pete Domenici , further bolstering Democratic fortunes in the Senate, wire services reported.
Udall defeated Republican Rep. Steve Pearce in the race to fill the seat left by a retiring Domenici, who served for 36 years in the Senate. According to a recent analysis of the race from the Cook Political Report , “as Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obamas chances of carrying the state in the presidential contest improved, Pearces already long odds of holding the seat for his party diminished and are now nonexistent.”
