Congress opens investigation into Fort Hood massacre

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A key congressional committee opened its investigation Thursday into the November 5 Fort Hood shootings with a pledge to find out if authorities failed to "connect the dots" and could have prevented the attack.
The head of the committee promised the inquiry would not interfere with a separate investigation into the shootings being conducted by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Attorney General Eric Holder.
"Their investigation looks backward and is punitive. Ours looks forward and is preventive," said Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut,
Authorities say Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, opened fire at a military processing center at Fort Hood Army Post, killing 13 people. Dozens of others were wounded.

Wary of anti-Muslim backlash, Lieberman said the committee will carry out its investigation "with respect for the thousands of Muslim Americans who are serving in the American military with honor and the ...

Find more top political news, videos, and blogs on BeltwayBlips: Congress, Joe Lieberman, U.S. Army

Senate panels moving on probe of Fort Hood shootings

Washington (CNN) – The heads of two key congressional committees said Wednesday they are stepping up their investigation into the November 5 shootings at Fort Hood, Texas.
Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, I Connecticut, told reporters on Capitol Hill that he would begin hearings Thursday focusing on what authorities knew about alleged shooter Nidal Malik Hasan before the incident.
The committee will seek to determine whether the attack could have prevented, and what it means in terms of the government's ability to defend against potential terrorist attacks within the United States.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, meanwhile, released the text of a letter he sent to the White House requesting the results of the joint investigation into the shootings now being conducted by the FBI and the Army.

President Barack Obama has ordered the investigation's findings to be submitted to his national security adviser by November 30.

The fight over Ft. Hood hearings

From NBC's Pete WilliamsA group of House Republicans today called for a more aggressive schedule of congressional hearings into the Ft. Hood shootings, instead of waiting until the Army's investigation has run its course.
The Republicans say they want to know what the military has done to find out if other troubled service members like Maj. Hasan are still out there. But congressional Democrats and the Obama administration would prefer to hold off on hearings to let the military do its investigation...( read more )

Find more top political news, videos, and blogs on BeltwayBlips: Congress, U.S. Army, Barack Obama, Brian Williams, Pete Sessions

Army suicides rise

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube Despite the fact that the Pentagon just announced last Friday that 133 active duty soldiers have committed suicide so far in 2009, today the Army admitted that there have actually been 211 possible soldier suicides so far this year.
Why the discrepancy? Last week's announcement did not factor in soldiers who were not on active duty at the time of their death -- that is, National Guard and Reserve soldiers.
As of November 16, 140 active duty U.S. soldiers are either confirmed or suspected to have committed suicide so far this year ... AND another 71 Army National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers who were NOT deployed at the time of death are also possible or confirmed suicide victims.

King: Army strain, recovery at Fort Lewis

    Embedded video from CNN Video
Fort Lewis, Washington (CNN) - The pain is excruciating, but to Army Spc. Michael Ballard, pain is the price of progress.
"I broke the top of my femur, so with the plate and screws, now I'm actually, two months later, able to walk - do some walking on my own," Ballard told us. "Physical therapy is coming along very well."
Once the hip is back to full strength, Ballard will need knee surgery to repair ligament damage, but he shrugs and voices encouragement at his progress and smiles a confident smile when asked about his ultimate goal.
"Get back and fight," Ballard said without hesitation. "Return to duty."
Veterans Day traditionally has been set aside more to honor those who have served rather than those still serving. But eight-plus years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq have created a huge class of combat veterans who still wear the uniform, many of them with two or three or more deployments under their belts and perhaps more in their futures.
