Minnesota: Perverse Incentives to Challenge Ballots?
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right — According to the latest statistics compiled by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Norm Coleman's campaign has thus far challenged 240 ballots in Minnesota's recount process, whereas the Franken campaign has challenged 172 ballots, a 68-ballot gap. If the rate of challenges holds steady as the rest of the state's ballots are re-counted, that would mean the Coleman campaign would send about 1,050 ballots to the state's canvassing board as compared with roughly 750 from Franken. ...

Franken slices further into Coleman's lead
AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth — ... With mores counted (46%), the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has Coleman's lead down to 136 votes. Still a lot of votes to be counted including 58% in Hennepin County, which Franken originally won by 50% - 36% margin, and 70% in Ramsey County, home of St. Paul, which Franken won by 52% - 34% margin. MN-Sen: Down to 136 votes
Daily Kos — With 46 percent reporting, it's down to a measly 136 votes. Of the big Democratic counties, 36 percent are in St Louis County, 42% in Hennepin County, and 30% in Ramsey. If you follow that link, you'll see that a bunch of counties don't even start counting until the 24th, and a bunch are waiting until December to do their recounts. MN-Sen: Franken within 140 votes
Daily Kos — With 48% of the recount in Minnesota's Senate race complete, Democrat Al Franken has narrowed Republican Norm Coleman's lead from 215 votes to 140. The Minnesota Star-Tribune has an excellent page keeping track of the recount results as they come in. It certainly appears that a good number of the ballots remaining to be counted again are in Franken strongholds; Hennepin County is less than half in, St. Louis County has counted less than 40% of ballots, and Ramsey  County has recounted 30% of ballots. Meanwhile, several counties haven't even ...

Coleman's Lead Down to 120 as Challenges Skyrocket
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right — According to figures compiled by the Star Tribune , Norm Coleman now holds a lead of 120 votes over Al Franken. Coleman's lead before the recount began had been 215 votes. A majority of the state's ballots -- some 64 percent -- have now been recounted. The counties re-counted to date were slightly redder than the state as a whole, favoring Coleman by an aggregate of about 1.6 points in the initial count. The difference has diminished, however, as more re-counted ballots roll in from Franken-friendly areas like Minneapolis. Meanwhile, ...

After another day of recounting ballots, the margin between Franken and Coleman gets even tighter
AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth — ... in Minnesota, Al Franken has closed the gap even further. After the initial canvass, Norm Coleman was up by 215 votes. Based on my math, using the "official" Minnesota Secretary of State's numbers, Al Franken has picked now picked up 100 votes since the recount started. That would drop Coleman's lead to 115 votes, with 60.86% of ballots recounted. These are votes, which were reported to the Secretary of State's office by 8:00 PM Central time last night. The Star-Tribune, which has its own system of tracking the recount, has the Coleman lead at 120 ...

Election Central Saturday Roundup
TPM Election Central — ... With 64% of ballots recounted in Minnesota, GOP Sen. Norm Coleman's lead has been cut from 215 votes down to 120 votes, according to the latest numbers from the Star Tribune -- but Al Franken will need a better pace than that for the remaining 36% of ballots, mostly from Democratic areas, if he is to erase the lead. The other remaining issue is the large number of challenged ballots, over 1,600 of them and climbing, that will ultimately decide this race at the state canvassing board. ...

Amid Epidemic of Challenges, Coleman Appears to Expand Lead
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right — According to the latest counts provided by the Star Tribune and the Minnesota Secretary of State, Republican Norm Coleman appears to have expanded his narrow lead over Al Franken on Day 4 of the recount process. The Star Tribune now puts Coleman's lead at 180 votes, and the Secretary of State, 167 votes. (The Star Tribune's tally appears to be inclusive of all of the Secretary of State figures and is probably the more authoritative estimate). Coleman's lead had been 215 votes before the recount process began, but had become as small as 115-120 votes at other stages of ...

TPM Election Central — ... According to the latest numbers collected by the Star Tribune, Coleman is ahead by 180 votes with 68% of ballots recounted. AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth — Here's the daily fix on the Franken-Coleman recount: Secretary of State's website has Coleman up by 167 with 65.65% of votes recounted. Star-Tribune has Coleman's lead at 180 with 68% of votes recounted. Approximately 2,000 ballots have been challenged -- and it's an almost even split between the campaigns. The Secretary of State shows Coleman leading with 42.22% to Franken's 40.90%. The race was tied ...

Minnesota Senate Recount -- update 2
The Reaction — ... lead of 120. What explains the increase? "Some of that may be attributed to the increased number of Franken ballots challenged by Coleman's campaign, which removes those ballots from the count." Even after the recount is completed, there will no doubt be a tense battle over those challenged ballots, as well as over thousands of rejected absentee ballots. ********** Although the number of challenges from each side is about even, Nate Silver proposes that "[v]ery ...

Hugh Hewitt: The Two Senate Races
Hugh Hewitt's TownHall Blog — President-elect Obama's refysal to rule out tax hikes in this fragile economic environment means that the GOP's victories in Minneosta and Georgia are crucial to retaining any kind of a breakwall in the Congress. Norm Coleman has a 180 vote lead with 68% of the vote recounted a second time. As a hand review of 2/3rds of the ballots cost Norm a net of 35 votes, it is hard to imagine that the last third will swing so drastically against him, so it will then be up to the State Canvassing Board to review the two to three thousand "challenged" ballots. Minnesota Recount Update, Not Optimistic
Open Left - Front Page — ... Norm Coleman now leads Al Franken by 231 votes according to the Star Tribune which is 16 more than he started with prior to the recounting. Of course the "real" margin has been almost entirely obscured by the more than 3,600 challenges lodged by the two campaigns. Nevertheless, I am not optimistic because county-by-county results show a clear pattern: the candidate who challenges the most ballots in a county is the candidate who has gained votes in the county.
