Buckley’s apostasy - Pick your poison
Roger L. Simon —
... my father founded must now distance itself from me. But then, conservatives have always had a bit of trouble with the concept of diversity. The GOP likes to say it’s a big-tent. Looks more like a yurt to me.
… I have to say - to each his yurt. The Democratic Party that put Joe Lieberman in the dumper for being a Scoop Jackson liberal is about as small a tent as you can imagine. In other words, pick your poison.

Fatwahed By The Right
The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan —
... movement” after endorsing Barack Obama in a blog posting on TheDailyBeast.com; since then, he said he has been blanketed with hate mail at the blog and at the National Review, where he has written a column.
As a result, he wrote to Richard Lowry, the editor of the National
Review, and its publisher, Jack Fowler, offering to resign, and “this
offer was rather briskly accepted,” Mr. Buckley said.
Lowry gives his take here. (Hat tip: Schwenkler) ...
What was Buckley thinking?
Hot Air » Top Picks —
... pushback was ridiculous, but expecting Obama to suddenly turn on all of the political allies who got him to the nation’s highest office in a revelation of moderation is like expecting Santa Claus to suddenly appear. On Halloween. And for what? An opportunity to still be more liberal than John McCain? I take Allahpundit’s point on intellectual freedom and his disapproval of NR’s acceptance of Buckley’s resignation, but I think they did the right thing. (I also find it telling that Buckley misrepresented the circumstances of that decision.) National Review has a specific ...
NR vs ... Buckley?
Real Clear Politics - TIME.com —
... as tongue-in-cheek since, in fact, Buckley resigned. But the picture he paints of what happened, not so much with NR as with his conservative audience, isn't flattering and he ends with Reagan's line: "I havenât left the Republican Party. It left me." He even goes so far as to say: "I have been effectively fatwahed (is that how you spell it?) by the conservative movement, and the magazine that my father founded must now distance itself from me." NR Editor Rich Lowry responds at the Corner : Chris is up with a post at The Daily Beast, "Sorry, Dad, I Was Fired." Iâd like to ...

So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me.
Thanks, anyway, for the memories, and here’s to happier days and with any luck, a bit less fresh hell.

The Christopher Buckley drama
Sister Toldjah —
... As you can see from the link in the above post, Buckley’s post was originally titled “Sorry Dad, I was fired” (it’s now been changed to “Buckley Bows Out of National Review”) which led many people - mostly on the left) to automatically believe he was kicked out of the Conservative Club for not toeing the “conservative line.” As NR editor Rich Lowry clarifies here, though, Buckley did inded hand in his resignation - and the “hate mail” he rec’d at his National Review email address ...

Obama's October Hat Trick Surprise
Gates of Vienna —
... Buckley claims he was “fired” but the editors at National Review have his chirpy, let’s-be-friends resignation email to counter this claim. It will be interesting to see how he manages to ally himself with a socialist Democrat and still retain any fidelity to his family’s heritage. It is true his father didn’t like George Bush’s policies in Iraq, but that never would have converted William Buckley into a supporter of the kind of politician that he founded his magazine to fight. ...
