Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska will be John McCain’s running mate per various news services. Young, woman, pro-life, hunts, advocate for drilling, executive experience. Let the games begin.
McCain Hits It Out of the Park With Palin (UPDATE: ABC says Palin is not the pick -- still in Alaska, UPDATE: CNBC says it is Palin, now confirmed by many sources)

[ UPDATE 10:35 Campaign confirms Palin to Fox News! UPDATE 10:19 a.m.: CNBC says it is Palin! Update: And so does the Chicago Tribune . The campaign is still mum and I expect it will be until the formal announcement. [ Update 10:05 a.m.: Carl Cameron just said Palin's staff in Alaska and in Washington say they cannot account for her whereabouts at this time and that their comments about her schedule were as of last night. If it is not her, I think we would be getting a denial by now, but maybe the absence of a denial is just the McCain campaign's way of keeping ...

Lawyers, Guns and Money —
Huh. Well, I guess maybe that secures Alaska's 3 electoral votes for McCain. It should also play well in British Columbia. If McCain is picking Palin (and we should note that this hasn't exactly been confirmed) in order to appeal to PUMAs, then I have to wonder whether the folks at Confluence, Corrente, and No Quarter haven't done Barack Obama a fantastic favor...
Vice President Palin? CNBC says it will be.
Stop The ACLU —
I’ve been rooting for Sarah Palin. The speculation about Governor Palin being McCain’s VP pick should be a HUGE confirmation for the McCain campaign that it’s the right choice. With all the rumors swirling, it’s still up in the air, but CNBC has reported that Governor Palin is McCain’s choice: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a self-styled “hockey mom” who has only been governor for a little over a year, is GOP Presidential candidate John McCain’s choice for Vice President, CNBC has learned. According to a Republican strategist, Palin is the nominee, though McCain’s campaign has not ...

Palin?
The Anonymous Liberal —
Several new outlets are reporting that McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. If true, it's kind of a weird pick. From a strategic standpoint, I suppose picking her does a couple things for John McCain. First, it's such a left-field pick that the press will be forced to devote a lot of coverage to it. Most people don't know who Palin is, so they can't just announce the pick and go back to talking about Obama's speech. By putting a woman on the ticket, McCain also keeps the Obama/Biden ticket from having sole claim to the "making history" argument. ...

McCain To Announce Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin As His Vice Presidential Pick
Think Progress —
Fox News and numerous media outlets are reporting that John McCain will name Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate this morning in Dayton.
Palin is anti-choice and is a member of an “anti-abortion group called Feminists for Life.” In 2002, when she was running for lieutenant governor, “Palin sent an e-mail to the anti-abortion Alaska Right to Life Board saying she was as ‘pro-life as any candidate can be’ and has ‘adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion.’”

By Michael J.W. Stickings UPDATE: Well, I was way wrong. It's looks like it's Palin. Quite the surprise. (See Creature's post above.) ********** As I've been predicting for some time -- and, hey, I was right about Biden -- it looks as though McCain will tap Romney to be his running mate. (And if it is, it'll be fun to go back over all that McCain-Romney tension/dislike during the primaries. Biden's comments about Obama not being ready ...

Sarah Palin to Join McCain’s Ticket
Comments from Left Field —
I remember thinking to myself last night, in the wake of the buzz that was Obama’s speech, that the one thing that McCain could do to really turn the tables was pick a woman to join his ticket. Therefore, when Pawlenty started getting some serious buzz swirling around him very late last night into early this morning, I was relieved.
Then the word comes out that it’s going to be Alaska’s governor, Sarah Palin.
And if John McCain had made this announcement five days ago, I think my worry would be well invested. ...

I've Never Been Happier in My Life To Be Wrong! McCain's pick for VP is actually Governor Palin. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Is McCain's Choice for VP
James Joyner's reaction: She’s going to make us pine for the days of Dan Quayle, methinks. Sarah Palin
Feministing —
... . She's young -- 44 -- and a self-described "hockey mom." Because Palin is relatively unknown on the national level, a lot of people are already identifying this as a ploy to snag the votes of disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters. I don't know whether that's true (my guess is yes), but it's my sense that Hillary backers who don't like Obama are not going to like a McCain/Palin ticket much better. But maybe I'm optimistic. ...

It was branded as a "snap choice"; a surprise, "a stunning selection of a little-known conservative newcomer"; a "surprise choice" that "confounded conventional wisdom"; "a stunning surprise, as McCain passed over many other better-known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months."
