On Michelle Obama, American Girl; and Black & Gay in America
The Moderate Voice —
... The first line of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ must read piece in the January/February Atlantic, American Girl, puts a distinctly 21st century twist on the “Clinton was the first Black president” trope. Says Coates, “The first time I saw Michelle Obama in the flesh, I almost took her for white.”From the piece: ...

Ta-Nehisi's profile is among the best: Obama’s Princeton thesis on “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community,” for example, has been interpreted as a budding Garveyite’s call to arms. Exhibit A seems to be her banal citation of Stokely Carmichael to explain black separatism, and her observation that Princeton made her “more aware of [her] ‘Blackness’ than ever before.”

Ta-Nahisi Coates, in the January/February Atlantic delves into this quirk extensively, explaining why Michelle Obama was initially viewed as an "Angry Black Woman" during the campaign and why that really isn't the case at all. The article gives an enlightening ...

Juan Williams targets Michelle Obama
Political Animal —
... about the scrutiny she'll face in the national spotlight, and Williams thought it appropriate to use the opportunity to tie the First Lady to black nationalism and the politics of victimization -- just because he felt like it. Naturally, Williams didn't (and couldn't) offer any evidence to back up his accusations against Michelle Obama. Worse, it's part of a pattern with him -- Williams has accused the First Lady of using " militant anger " before. Ta-Nehisi Coates, who has a fascinating piece on Michelle Obama in the latest issue of the Atlantic , added a brief ...
