Shocker: Democrats Won’t Fund Closing Of Guantanamo Bay
Say Anything —
In order to close down Guantanamo Bay you have to have money. The detainees have to be moved somewhere. Supplies and equipment have to be moved out. Personnel has to be brought in to handle it all. It isn’t cheap. But you’d think that the Democrats, who made a campaign issue out of how evil Guantanamo Bay is, would be happy to pay to remove the black mark on America’s soul (as they have it) the detention facility represents.
As it turns out, the Democrats are finding that Gitmo is an easier issue to campaign on than it is to handle as political leaders.

Senate Democrats won't give Obama money to close Gitmo
News —
Senate Democrats won't give Obama money to close Gitmo Senate Democrats will not give the Obama administration $80 million it requested to close Guantanamo Bay and relocate the detainees. The AP reports Democrats will not fork over the funds until the administration has come up with a specific plan for dealing with Gitmo prisoners. Republicans have been hammering Democrats over the possibility that detainees may be transferred to facilities in the United States. GOPers in the House recently introduced legislation that would bar the administration from transferring prisoners to the U.S. without the consent of the governor and legislator of ...
What Eight Years Wasn’t Long Enough?
Chicago Boyz —
Okay, the leftmost half of the Democrats, including Obama, Pelosi et al, have continuously claimed for the previous 8 years that detaining illegal combatants at Gitmo was obviously illegal under U.S. law, immoral and counterproductive. Usually, when someone makes such a sweeping claim, it means that they have throughly thought out the problem and have a detailed alternative to offer. Given that Democrats have had 8 years to think about the problem, why didn’t Obama and congressional Democrats have a plan to handle Gitmo and its detainees ready to implement on day one of his administration?
Why are they still dithering to the point of ...
Fear 1, Dems 0
The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan —
by Chris Bodenner Senate Democrats today blocked the $80 million Obama requested to shut down Guantanamo by 2010, insisting on a more detailed plan before doing so. But Joe Klein thinks they simply got spooked: Guantanamo is a symbol of American brutality that needs to be
expunged to the extent possible by closure, as soon as practicable. We
have a system of military prisons that would be perfectly adequate to
handle the detainees who are not returned to the home countries.
Apparently, President Obama is going to give a speech on this topic on
Thursday--but the Senators just couldn't wait 48 hours while ...

I mean, for crying out loud:
President Barack Obama’s allies in the Senate will not provide funds to close the Guantanamo Bay prison next January, a top Democratic official said Tuesday.
