Hopechange: Obama Appoints American Taliban Lawyer to Justice
The Jawa Report —
... linked Lileks this morning and reading the post I kept thinking what was the point? All this is old news, right? I mean, of course Johnny Walker Lindh -- the American Taliban -- was a traitor and any lawyer who believed there's anything admirable about a guy who leaves the greatest country on Earth (note to liberals: that would be America ) to go fight to help one of the most repressive governments on Earth (note to liberals: that would be the Taliban ) would have to be either a first class America hater or the poster child of moral equivocation. Tony West, Taliban ...

... of the hearing having occurred. Apparently there was nothing of interest in West’s nomination.
Curiously enough, though, not one of these brief reports mention that Tony West was "American Taliban" terrorist John Walker Lindh's defense lawyer. Another key bit of info left out of these announcements was that Tony West raised $65 million for Obama's presidential campaign. Money well spent if it gets a cushy government job, I suppose.
In fact, for many of us, it took James Lileks to remind us all that West was Lindh's lawyer (H/T HotAir.com). It took Lileks ...

... by fellow Americans. In wiser times Johnny Taliban would have been promptly executed, but as Jane Fonda established, treason is no longer a crime we take seriously.
Even most lawyers wouldn't have the stomach to defend scum like Lindh. But San Francisco's Tony West was up for the job. He even got prosecutors to drop a restriction on Lindh's foreign travel, so that he could go visit Muslims' magic meteor in Mecca.
West has more unsavory work in his future. James Lileks reports:
Tony West is the President's nominee to ...

Obama Appoints Terrorist Lawyer To DoJ Post

I realize that all lawyers represent some clients that the public might view as unsavory. Indeed, most lawyers will at some point represent clients who they KNOW are guilty. So maybe Im overreacting to the appointment of C. Anthony West to an ...

West will be the assistant attorney general in charge of a division representing the United States, its departments and agencies, members of Congress, Cabinet officers and other federal employees in a wide range of litigation. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION
Dr. Sanity —
... Additionally, I really don't think that Obama should be appointing attorneys that "volunteer" to defend terrorists--somehow, in this case I don't imagine he did it out of love for justice and freedom. Instead, I'm with Lileks. Feel free to call me vindictive; and perhaps not very moderate --especially about certain things. ...

... would want to live in a world in which lawyers are judged by the clients they take," he said.
The Times would certainly not want anyone to use professor Henderson's criteria to judge Obama Justice Department appointee Anthony West. Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed West as the President's nominee to head the Justice Department's Civil Division.
So what's news? West (hat-tip the inimitable humorist James Lileks) was the defense lawyer for John Walker Lindh, the American ...
