Prop. 8 wins
Ben Smith's Blog —
The second-most symbolically important vote yesterday was in California, where they banned same-sex marriage yesterday.
That conservative result came from the same electorate that gave Obama 61% of its votes, and it was based on wide support among African-American voters.
Which is a reminder those social issues were less important to voters this year, the shift on them -- if there is one -- is slow.
California Gay Marriage Banned As Proposition 8 Passes
The Huffington Post | Full News Feed —
A measure to once again ban gay marriage in California was passed by voters in Tuesday's election, throwing into doubt the unions of an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who wed during the last 4 1/2 months.
As Proposition 8, the most divisive and emotionally fraught issue on the state ballot this year, took a lead in early returns, supporters gathered at a hotel ballroom in Sacramento and cheered.

Harry Reid: Crowing and unclassy. As ever.
Sorry, Mr. Reid: Yer man has no mandate; he ran on tax-cuts and other “centrist” ideas. But then, so did Bill Clinton. We know. We know.
EJ Dionne: Don’t play to the center-right, Obama! Keep away from the center-right! We’re not a center-right nation!

I confess, I didn't see this coming: California votes yes on Proposition 8. I do think, though, that the success of anti-gay-marriage initiatives reinforces something I strongly believe: the issue was pressed too quickly, and in the wrong venue. Using the courts to establish a right to gay marriage made opponents feel threatened, and railroaded. If socially conservative voters hadn't felt they needed to protect themselves from activist judges, we wouldn't be seeing these provisions written into state constitutions. Few of them would probably ...

Otherwise, we wouldn’t be celebrating President-Elect Barack Obama.
Or has everyone suddenly forgotten the bad old days?
Discrimination is just that, whether we’re talking about African Americans
or gay rights or a woman’s right to privacy. You don’t get to vote on some amendment
that takes these rights away from anyone. It doesn’t matter if you agree or
not. Because when we do it’s relegated to the ...

The dreadful shadow of fear, confusion, and anger that has defined the last seven years has given way to a new sense of unity, optimism, and patriotism. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this moment. With so many great things to say about this election, I can’t help but dwell on the fact that Prop. 8 has passed . ... have been left in the lurch. Some are gearing up for a fight. “Lawyers for same-sex couples said they will argue that the anti-gay-marriage measure was an illegal constitutional revision — not a more limited amendment, as backers said. The legal action contends that Proposition 8 actually revises the state Constitution by altering such fundamental tenets as equal-protection guarantees. A measure to revise the state Constitution can be placed before voters only by the Legislature. Opponents of gay marriage expressed outrage at the move.“This is exactly the type of behavior ...
