Clinton and Geithner
The Stump —
It's official: NYT is
reporting that Hillary Clinton will be secretary of state.
And, in an announcment
everyone thought would happen before the SOS pick, NBC is reporting that Tim
Geithner will be tapped as treasury secretary Monday.

"Statement"
The Atlantic Politics Channel —
A delightfully cryptic comment issued earlier from Hillary Clinton's Senate office, following the simple headline, "STATEMENT" (On what? one might ask) Per Philippe Reines: "We're still in discussions, which are very much on track. Any reports beyond that are premature." New York Times, among others, says she'll resign her Senate seat to accept Pres-elect Obama's offer to be Secretary of State. -Mike Memoli
Don't be fooled by the rocks that she got, she's just Hillary from the block.
Alarming News —
Don't be fooled by the rocks that she got, she's just Hillary from the block. NYT: Clinton Decides to Accept Post at State Dept., Confidants Say You know, I'm so surprised by her decision . I really thought she loved being Senator from New York, really getting into the minutiae of various bills to help the state which she loves so much and in which she has so much history. I know she will keep wearing that Yankee cap, wherever she ends up. She may be international now, but we all will remember her as the true New Yorker she was. NYT: Hillary set to accept Sec. of State cabinet position
Sister Toldjah —
Yes, she can - and she is.
Effectively, Obama has soothed the ruffled feathers of the PUMAs with this pick, and has taken away any chance of a “rogue” campaign for presidency she might have been considering for 2012. Smart move, but does it represent “change? Which brings me to this:
Barack Obama, campaigning against Hillary Clinton - 12/27/07:
“The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a ...

New York Times: Secretary of State Clinton
Patterico's Pontifications —
[Guest post by DRJ]
The New York Times reports Hillary Clinton has decided to relinquish her Senate seat and accept the position as Obama’s Secretary of State.
The source(s) are unnamed Clinton confidantes so skepticism is appropriate. However, if this is true, it stuns me that Obama would pass over the chance to choose Hillary as his VP and assure his election while relegating her to a marginal position in his administration, only to hand her the keys to the State Department and significant influence over foreign policy during his transition.
Obama must be feeling overwhelmed and very lonely to do this. ...
Clinton Spox: 'We're Still in Discussions'
The Hill's Blog Briefing Room —
Clinton Spox: 'We're Still in Discussions' A spokesman for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) downplayed reports that she will accept an offer to become secretary of State in President-elect Barack Obama's administration. "We're still in discussions, which are very much on track," said Philippe Reins, a senior adviser to Clinton. "Any reports beyond that are premature." The New York Times reported Friday afternoon that Clinton has decided to take the post. The Times story relied on "two confidants."

... “Oh okay well I guess nobody will mind if I let it slip that Bill took a half-million dollars from this shady Kazakh billionaire pedophile Marxist guerilla Bilderberg mastermind.” PROBLEM SOLVED.
This works out well for Hillary, too: she doesn’t have to wait for Ted Kennedy to die or retire so that she can fuck up healthcare reform, again, and now she has a chance to really “make a difference” by doing whatever Joe Biden tells her to do.

The Saturday Word: Obama Aims for 2.5 Million Jobs
The Caucus —
In his weekly address for broadcast today, President-elect Barack Obama announced his intention to create 2.5 million new jobs by January 2011. “There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it’s likely to get worse before it gets better,” he said. “But January 20th is our chance to begin anew – with a new direction, new ideas, and new reforms that will create jobs and fuel long-term economic growth.” Mr. Obama said he had “directed my economic team to come up with an Economic Recovery plan that will mean 2.5 million more jobs by January of 2011.” He was short on details, but other comments suggest the ...
Oh, The Tea Parties Hillary Will Give
Tennessee Guerilla Women —
As Secretary of State, I guess Hillary Rodham Clinton will be throwing tea parties like nobody's business. As we learned back in the primary, because men have no comparable experience to that of a First Lady, it counts for next to nothing when you're running for president. Presidents do important things; their wives attend tea parties. Trivializing Hillary Rodham Clinton's experience as First Lady, including her longstanding relationships with world leaders, and her visits to "refugee camps, clinics, orphanages, and villages all around the world," was one of the many deeply sexist weapons the male candidates and their ...

The Obama national security "team" -- part of that much-hailed "team of rivals" -- does not yet exist, but it does seem to be heaving into view. And so far, its views seem anything but rivalrous. Mainstream reporters and pundits lovingly refer to them as "centrist," but, in a Democratic context, they are distinctly right of center. The next secretary of state looks to ...
