Smart Diplomacy: Mrs. Clinton Helps Re-install Ousted Honduran Thug
JammieWearingFool —
To think these people will actually consider this some sort of diplomatic victory. Let's forget the fact Manuel Zelaya was justifiably removed from office. He's a far left thug, so obviously our current government must side with him. I can't wait to see their reaction when he refuses to leave after the upcioming election. A lingering political crisis in Honduras seemed to be nearing an end on Friday after the de facto government agreed to a deal that would allow Manuel Zelaya, the deposed president, to return to office. The government of Roberto Micheletti, which had refused ...
Honduran government caves into US pressure, agrees to Zelaya’s restitution

... there must be economic threats as well.
El Heraldo (in Spanish) makes it clear that US State Dept. envoy for Latin America Thomas Shannon went to Honduras to twist arms: his position was that the November 29 elections would not be recognized unless Zelaya was returned to power. I guess nothing ensures democracy like restoring to power the guy who did his outmost to undermine democracy, at least in Shannon’s eyes.

The right-wing coup government has made a deal in Honduras:
The government of Roberto Micheletti, which had refused to let Mr. Zelaya return, signed an agreement with Mr. Zelaya's negotiators late Thursday that would pave the way for the Honduran Congress to restore the ousted president and allow him to serve out the remaining three months of his term.
Hillary Clinton and other American diplomats evidently played a major role. This will allow the elections later this year to go ahead.

... The media are jubilant because the State Department has finally brokered a deal to "resolve" the standoff in Honduras between the ruling junta and ousted President Mel Zelaya. ... So let’s take a time out to note that the Obama administration’s approach to Honduras looks to be paying off in the form of a deal that will temporarily re-instate President Zelaya in advance of new elections to be held in January. The US has an unfortunate history of backing coups in Latin America and an unfortunate history of heavy-handed involvement in Latin American domestic politics, so threading the needle between heavy-handed involvement and coup-backing was difficult. But they got the job done, and as Tim Fernholz says the results are ...

... that foreign policy achievements "have a way of not getting noticed if they don't involve killing anyone with high explosives. This is too bad, since finding ways to resolve conflicts that don't involve killing anyone with high explosives is generally preferable to approaches based on death and destruction." A Return to the Constitutional Order in Honduras

The four month long Honduran crisis is inching towards a negotiated conclusion that would restore the ousted Manuel Zelaya to the Presidency of the small poor Central American nation. The essentials of the deal struck are those negotiated earlier by Costa Rican President Óscar Arias and other Latin American leaders but the impetus in breaking the stalemate is largely due to the efforts of the Obama Administration and the Organization of American States (OAS). Under the terms of the deal, Manuel Zelaya is returned to power to serve out the remainder of his term. The accord would establish a national unity government and a verification ...
