Dirty Stimulus Jobs Data Exaggerates Stimulus Impact
One of the key talking points for the stimulus that was passed earlier this year was that it would “save or create” jobs. Lots of jobs. Oodles of jobs. Jobs piled so high, we’ll have to hire people to dig us out of all the jobs we will have. Or, more specifically, the Obama ...

So, Are You Stimulated?
doubleplusundead — So, Are You Stimulated? Ok, we know that the Funemployment jumped again. But remember how Obama claimed that he would "save or create" a bazillion and eleventy jobs with his Porkulus bill? Ummm.....not so much. Over 6,500 of all the “created or saved” jobs are cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), which is really just a raise of about 2% for 6,500 people. That’s not a job saved, no matter how you calculate it. Over 6,000 of the jobs are federal work study jobs, which are part time jobs for needy students. As such, they’re not really “jobs” in the sense that most other federal ...

October Job Losses Accelerate Again – 10.2%!
Innocent Bystanders — ... , and blogs such as Political Math (H/T d3ft punk). But forget the quantitative treatment for a moment and consider what the Obama team’s graph said on a qualitative level. The graph says that within a couple of quarters, the stimulus package will stop the increase in unemployment and reverse the employment trend. That was the real mission of the stimulus. Stop job loss. Get the private sector hiring again. So no matter how convoluted and fanciful the “jobs created or saved” numbers get, we just have to remember what the point used to be, and realize how far short we’ve ...

You're missing the point
SCSUScholars — ... actions." Were those the words to come from Christina Romer's or Jared Bernstein's mouth, I'd have no debate. But I think it is more than semantics to go from "Simulations of a conventional macroeconomic model show that, without the tax cuts, the level of real GDP" would be x% lower and unemployment y% higher, than to say you've created or saved 640,329 jobs. Official data here, where it helpfully adds "as reported by recipients", perhaps to shift the guilt. The problem is the administration has oversold its control of the economy, and used ...
