Given the debate here about the original bailout, I don't expect everyone to agree with him, and I am not sure how squarely I agree with him on all points. But the piece is gorgeously composed and the comments are just as illuminating. The post and the thread get at so many of the intangible and irreplaceable aspects of American culture - our stories and mythologies, our past, our indebtedness to that past, our seething snobbery about the working class.
