Obama's Jewish Problem
Eschaton — Less real than Kerry's Jewish problem. One would hope that those scribes (the honest but stupid ones, not the hacks) who pushed this idea would rethink some of their premises. Jewish voters are the second most reliable Democratic racial/ethnic voting bloc, after African-Americans. It's true every election, and yet every Dem candidate has a "Jewish problem."

Arianna Huffington: Tuesday's Second Biggest Winner: Democracy
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — ... Obama won among both women (56/43) and men (49/48). Whites favored McCain (55/43), but blacks gave Obama percent of their vote, and Hispanics went for Obama 66/31. ...

Robert Weissman: Not Yet at the Promised Land
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — ... Barack Obama's election signals a significant shift in U.S. racial attitudes, especially among younger people. Obama received a higher portion of the white vote than Democratic candidate John Kerry did in 2004 -- in fact, he won a higher share (43 percent) than any Democratic candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Obama won a strong majority of white voters under age 29 (beating McCain 54-44). ...

The Decline of The Conservative Intellectual
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right — ... The 1980 figure is extrapolated based on Jimmy Carter's performance among all college graduates. Carter won only 35 percent of college graduates in 1980, but Democrats have generally performed better among those with postgraduate educations than those with "just" a college degree; we estimate Carter's share of the postgraduate vote was 40 percent. Other figures are taken from New York Times exit polling. ...

GOP Has Always Been Dominated by White Voters
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right — ... has data out suggesting that 89 percent of self-identified Republicans are white; the comparable figure among Democrats is 65 percent. These numbers closely match those from last November's Presidential election, when 89 percent of John McCain's voters were white as were 60 percent of Barack Obama's, according to exit polls. ...

Demographics and the Presidential Election
Wizbang — ... was very helpful in that part, while I had to use a variety of sources for the exit polling, although the New York Times was generally the most consistent source . I am still chewing through the data, but found some interesting indicators worth consideration. For instance, the total voters for 2008 made up 41.5% of the population, slightly down from 2004's 41.9% but above the 1972-2008 average of 39.3%. Obama in 2008 took 2.8 million more votes than Kerry did in 2004, while McCain in 2008 took 4.5 million fewer votes than George W. Bush in 2004. Barack Obama won the White ...

2008 Electorate: Why Republicans Should Be Really Scared
Open Left - Front Page — ... among others has emphasized this as well.  In 1980, whites were 89% of the electorate.  In 2008, they made up 74% of the electorate.  Also in 2008, only 59% of 18-year olds were non-Hispanic white, and (as mentioned above) only 55% of newborns.  To return to the graph from the introduction: ...
