Big Break for Franken
Talking Points Memo —
... As I mentioned earlier, the Minnesota state canvassing board is meeting today to make some crucial decisions on the Senate race recount. Already this morning the board has unanimously decided to ask local election boards to count an estimated 1,600 absentee ballots that were disqualified by clerical error, which is expected to boost significantly Franken's prospects of catching Coleman in the recount. ...
Big boost for Franken
Political Animal —
BIG BOOST FOR FRANKEN.... The state canvassing board in Minnesota got together this morning to determine whether to count improperly rejected absentee ballots. For Al Franken, obviously, the goal was to have the ballots included. The canvassing board members agreed, making the Democrat's chances of victory that much more likely. Eric Kleefeld explained that Franken's chances of winning "may have just gone up astronomically." The state canvassing board just voted unanimously that absentee ballots that were initially rejected because of clerical errors -- and the current ...
MN-Sen: Good Day for Franken
Swing State Project —
Al Franken just scored a couple of big wins today at a meeting of the state canvassing board. First, there's this:
Some good news for Al Franken: The state canvasing board just voted unanimously to compensate for the loss of those 133 missing ballots in Minneapolis by going back to the recorded Election Night vote totals for this precinct, sparing Al the loss of a net 46 votes.

... Michael J.W. Stickings The Star Tribune has Coleman up by 192, while Minnesota's secretary of state has him up by 687. Why the significant difference? The former's count includes the pre-recount totals from Minneapolis Ward 1 Precinct 3, where 133 ballots are missing, whereas the latter's count excludes the 1,965 ballots from that precinct, where Franken did well. As TPM's Eric Kleefeld reported earlier today, though, things are now looking much brighter for Franken: ...

From TPMElectionCafe: Franken Gets Big Win At Canvass Board By Eric Kleefeld - December 12, 2008, 11:48AM Al Franken's chances of winning the Minnesota recount may have just gone up astronomically. The state canvassing board just voted unanimously that absentee ballots that were initially rejected because of clerical errors -- and the current estimate from the hearing is that there could be nearly 1,600 of them, based on some extrapolation -- should be counted, probably the single biggest issue that the Franken campaign has ...
Minnesota Canvassing Board Sides with Franken on Two Key Issues, Sending Coleman to Court
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right —
... In the second ruling, the Canvassing Board unanimously determined to recommend to the counties that they sort through their absentee ballots to determine which might have been rejected erroneously, and then resubmit their totals to the state after counting such erroneously rejected ballots. A recommendation, it should be mentioned, stops short of a requirement, as the Canvassing Board apparently felt as though it does not have the jurisdiction to require counties to count the absentee ballots without a court order. But, the counties ...

... have just gone up astronomically,” because the state canvassing board just voted unanimously that absentee ballots that were initially rejected because of clerical errors should be counted.
Reportedly, there could be nearly 1,600 of these ballots. This has been one of the biggest issues that Al Franken has been focusing on during this incredible ballot saga.
According to TPM, this “could possibly seal the deal for Franken.”
