News — ... The Libertarian Party candidate for Senate in Georgia's general election expressed a preferance Monday for the Democratic candidate, Jim Martin, in the state's competitive runoff. In an intereview with the liberal blog "Senate Guru," LIbertarian Allen Buckley said Martin would be a better candidate on Georgians' civil liberties. Buckley also slammed Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R), the incumbent, for his position on the bailout package for the financial industry approved earlier this year. Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — [Originally posted at my blog Senate Guru.] Allen Buckley was the Libertarian Party's nominee for U.S. Senate in Georgia in 2008. On Election Day, Buckley took 3.4% of the vote. Buckley's 128,000 votes would have put either Democrat Jim Martin or Republican Saxby Chambliss over the 50% mark, avoiding a run-off. Of course, as neither Chambliss nor Martin scored over 50%, there is a run-off. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently asked: "How will Libertarians affect Georgia runoff?" DownWithTyranny! — ... Political insiders are all excited about all this stuff. Should the grassroots be? I'm not so certain. Sure, I think Norm Coleman and Saxby Chambliss are two of the absolute worst members of the U.S. Senate and each makes the place and even bigger disgrace than it would be without them. And both Franken and Martin seem like decent and conscientious guys. (Even Allen Buckley, the Libertarian candidate who threw the Georgia race into a run-off, thinks Martin is a better choice.)
