... Meanwhile, it’s important to note, I think, that after two days of the Republican convention, Obama’s lead still remains solid over McCain. We won’t know until tomorrow at the very earliest if the blood letting last night will help close that gap for McCain, but the simple fact that thus far Republicans aren’t seeing even a modicum of a bounce should be indicative of problems for McCain. ...

... to 36 percent. The poll also shows that the majority of Clinton supporters continue to support Obama - 67 percent in this poll, up from 58 percent last weekend. McCain has seen a similar uptick from white evangelicals since the weekend - 66 percent now, up from 57 percent. The base solidifies, Hillary voters come home, and it’s a duel to the death for independents. I like these odds, as much as anyone constitutionally incapable of believing in victory can. (We’re still down seven in Gallup! ) Kaus offers the Democrats some ...
CBS poll: McCain, Obama Tied
Stubborn Facts —
McCain Closes Eight-Point Gap From Poll Taken Last Weekend. Notice that this poll was conducted before Palin's widely-viewed knockout speech. Now, both Rasmussen and Gallup contradict this poll - at time of writing, Gallup says McCain trails by six and Rasmussen says by four. Should be interesting to see some numbers tomorrow and early next week from more comprehensive weekend polling.

What Constitutes Success for Palin?

... That battle, though, looks largely to be an uphill one. First, she and McCain face a significant polling deficit, with the Gallup Daily Tracker placing them seven points behind. And then there’s the end game. I do not think that the McCain campaign wants to come out of it’s convention without at the very least drawing even to Obama in the polls. ...

... Another woman quickly agreed: "He could just keel over at any moment," she said, adding that she wants to know "just exactly what [Palin’s] going to do, more than just hearing about her family." Another woman chimed in, saying Palin should approach the campaign as someone who is "applying" for the job. "She has to apply for this job like she’s running for president. ... She’s going to have to sell herself." Also: Gallup Daily: No Dent in Obama Lead So Far (49-42) but it should start to drop tomorrow as the ...
Gallup Tracking: Obama Maintains His Lead
Taegan Goddard's Political Wire —
The latest Gallup tracking poll shows Sen. Barack Obama continues to hold a lead over Sen. John McCain, 49% to 42%.
The results, so far, suggest the Republican convention has done little to dent Obama's national edge. However, the survey was mostly completed before Gov. Sarah Palin gave her speech last night.
