WA-08: Seattle Times Ignores Illegal Reichert Loan, Smears Burner
Daily Kos —
The blaring headline at the Seattle Time's, what passes as Seattle's "leading" paper, Darcy Burner's claims of a Harvard degree in economics aren't true" and the subsequent story would lead one to think Darcy Burner was a serial liar. Until someone asks the real question, which Matt Stoller did: Burner has a degree in computer science and economics from Harvard, as her website says. Having gone to Harvard, I know how this works. You get a degree under one department, take classes in another, write a thesis joining the ...
CONGRESS: The Republican 'Death List'
Taylor Marsh —
... save her. Of course, she was whining that big, bad Chris Matthews trapped her. This is a congresswoman?
...and news from Politico comes something that is also sweet. Republicans are leaving Musgrave to twist. She liked to use uniformed military as political props. Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and EMILY’s List have been hitting Musgrave relentlessly, along with the DCCC. Good riddance.
Oh, and if you live anywhere near Seattle, well, is the Seattle Times trying to take Darcy Burner out? ...
WA-08: Burner Up By 4 in SUSA; SSP Upgrades to "Tossup"
Swing State Project —
... One other developing happening in this race: there's a kerfuffle, helped along by the Seattle Times (the more conservative of Seattle's two papers), over Burner's degree from Harvard. Nobody's disputing that she graduated, just parsing whether or not she double-majored in computer science and economics. ( ...
Seattle Times Runs Misleading Piece On Darcy Burner
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com —
... if Burner has been lying about her academic degree.
In her opening statement at an October 10, 2008 debate, Burner said, "I loved economics so much that I got a degree in it from Harvard...Now everywhere I go in this district, the only thing people want to talk to me about is the economy." From there, reporter Emily Heffter leaps to this conclusion: "But Burner doesn't have an economics degree from Harvard."
In fact, she does. Harvard graduate and Open Left blogger Matt Stoller explains in detail:

Partisan hacks
HorsesAss.Org —
... Really, how hard is that for Emily Heffter and her editors at the Seattle Times to understand? Darcy Burner has a degree in computer science and economics, and Harvard’s failure to use the terminology they prefer, doesn’t make it any less so. ...
Darcy Burner’s Degree
Matthew Yglesias —
My thoughts on this absurd Seattle Times hit on Darcy Burner:
Harvard, as you know, is old and fancy. Consequently, it has a lot of old and fancy terminology and procedures that differ somewhat from the American norm. They don’t, for example, have “teaching assistants” (TAs) instead they have “teaching fellows” (TFs). You don’t live in a “dorm” you live in a “house.” Instead of “RAs” there are “proctors” and “tutors.” And instead of “majors” there are “concentrations.” If I want to communicate some ...
Darcy Burner moves into the lead, gets hit with misleading (wrong) article in local paper
AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth —
... Yesterday, via Matt Stoller at OpenLeft, we learned that the Seattle Times ran an factually-wrong hit piece on Democratic candidate Darcy Burner, who is running in Washington's Eighth Congressional District. Matt single-handedly debunked the premise of the piece, which claimed Darcy didn't have a degree in economics from Harvard -- in fact, she does. (And, after Matt's criticism, the paper has already changed ...

... easy, non-mathematical Ec courses). So it’s not exactly a minor (which we didn’t have then, though we do now), and it’s also not anything that the registrar would be able to certify (because it’s an internal requirement of the computer science faculty). But it’s something everyone getting a degree in CS had to do (though other students would have other specialties). The way Darcy is describing herself is accurate.
And here is Dean Lewis’ account of his interview with Heffter: ...
Hmm…
HorsesAss.Org —
Darcy Burner does indeed have a B.A. from Harvard in computer science and economics; that is an established fact.
So, when Reichert, the NRCC and their enablers at the Seattle Times argue that claiming a degree in “economics” is misleading because it fails to mention the “computer science,” wouldn’t the opposite be equally true? Wouldn’t it be just as misleading to claim a degree in “computer science” while failing to mention the emphasis on economics? Are they really implying ...
Dave Reichert: Another lying Republican hypocrite exposed -- no thanks to the media
Crooks and Liars —
... Reichert's campaign called Burner's statements about her degree "outrageous."
"It calls into question everything that she has said to this point," said Amanda Halligan, a spokeswoman for the Reichert campaign. "It demonstrates an arrogance that she thinks she can say what she wants and that no one is going to learn the truth."
Darcy's response is here.
The problem is, as Matt Stoller explained in some detail yesterday, it's all bullshit:
The story is literally made up out of whole cloth. Burner has a ...
Bailing out the gatekeepers
HorsesAss.Org —
... With another dismal state revenue forecast expected today, House Democratic leaders now say they’ll likely propose sending voters a tax package this year to help deal with a staggering shortfall in the state budget.
“I’m assuming there will probably be something that goes on the ballot,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chairwoman Kelli Linville, D-Bellingham. House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler agreed.
And of course the gate-keepers would want to keep on gate-keeping, assuming they can stay in business: ...
