Better that Patterico fails, I think
protein wisdom —
From Mr Frey, Esquire : I know: when [Limbaugh] says he hopes Obama fails, he doesn’t mean he wants to see Americans suffer. He just doesn’t want liberal policies enacted because he thinks they’re bad for the country. I get it. I agree with that. But, you know, that’s nuance . The problem is, Americans have short attention spans and don’t always do nuance well . Just by writing the title of this post the way I did, I’ll get an angry reaction from some — even though, if you read the post, I haven’t said anything particularly negative about Limbaugh. I Hope Rush Limbaugh Fails
It’s smart for Rush. If Obama is going to anoint him as the leader of the Republican Party, he may as well respond in kind. And hey, he articulates conservative principles very well.
But still. I hope Rush Limbaugh fails in his attempt to set himself up as the de facto head of the Republican Party. [UPDATE: More accurately, as the de facto head of the conservative movement. See UPDATE below.]
My hope is that people on the Right stop taking Rush more seriously than ...
Limbaugh, Failure, and Media Distortion
Outside The Beltway | OTB —
Limbaugh, Failure, and Media Distortion Commenter Bithead alerts me to a cross-blog debate that I somehow missed between Patrick Frey and Jeff Goldstein over Rush Limbaugh’s “I hope Obama fails” line at CPAC and the ensuing media frenzy. Essentially, Patrick argues that conservatives should be more careful about what they say so as to avoid being distorted in the media and Jeff retorts that conservatives should be free to say what they want and expect to be treated honorably. As a general matter, I’m with Jeff on this one. I’m tired of obviously benign ...
Fools Rush In

Let me too two cents into the "Rush Hopes Obama Fails" brawl. First, I am troubled - a scuffle between Patterico and Jeff Goldstein of Protein Wisdom matches brilliance versus genius (or maybe vice versa). Briefly, Patterico says Rush Limbaugh is being deliberately provocative and self-promoting with his "I hope Obama fails" formulation; a kinder, gentler approach would be to assert that "I want Obama’s terrible policies to be voted down so America can succeed”. Jeff Goldstein thinks that it is too much of a concession to given in to a biased and unsympathetic media. ...
David Frum Does Not Speak for Me Any More Than Rush Limbaugh Does
Hot Air » Top Picks —
... at Hot Air when I said that, while I believe Rush Limbaugh is a very talented salesman for conservative values, I think it would be counterproductive to set him up as the head of the conservative movement. As long as I’m carrying around “NOT IN MY NAME” placards, let me add another person who doesn’t speak for me: David Frum. Frum has a ...

... , are saying that Rush does not help our cause when he says, for example, that he wants President Obama to fail. Others even claim that we should be disingenuous and talk down to people instead. "The problem is, Americans have short attention spans and don’t always do nuance well," says one of our most nuanced thinkers, Paterico. ...
Daniel Hannan: I Hope They Fail
The Sundries Shack —
... looks like Daniel Hannan, MEP and newest conservative heartthrob, just got himself disinvited from all the cool conservative parties. Here’s the title of his latest blog post : G20 summit: here’s hoping that Gordon Brown and Barack Obama fail Not only will he find himself persona non grata at the tony gatherings of the great conservative minds but he’ll also find himself the subject of a myriad of blog posts and news articles explaining why he’s simply not nuanced enough to be a conservative leader . Poor guy. No one really ...
