September 04, 2008 MCCAIN'S SPEECH: Not bad. But, like Obama, he was overshadowed -- Obama by Bill Clinton, McCain by Sarah Palin. UPDATE: Thoughts on the speech from Professor Bainbridge. And more from Megan McArdle. Meanwhile, on TV Karl Rove is saying "It's the best speech he's given ...

Reactions to McCain’s Speech
The Anchoress — ... has the full text, and his own reactions as well. I’ll excerpt its stirring conclusion, in case (like me) you could not quite hear it for all the cheering - all italics mine: I’m not running for president because I think I’m blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God. If you find faults with our country, make it a better one. If you’re disappointed with the mistakes of ...

A moving speech (even if it's hard to be moved at this point)
Classical Values — ... it seems a little pointless, not only because machines do a better job, but because the candidates release prepared texts which are available for analysis later. So I didn't liveblog McCain's speech. Instead, I watched it, and I have to say I was moved. Contrary to popular belief, McCain doesn't talk about his captivity in North Vietnam all that much. I agree with Glenn Reynolds that it was a good speech but "like Obama, he was overshadowed -- Obama by ...

McCain Reaches Out To Center In Acceptance Speech
The Moderate Voice — ... responsibly, and we have to be strong in our defense and prudent in foreign policy. This is the conservatism I still believe in. Deep down, I’m sure McCain does too. But it will only come from the ashes of this fundamentalist, mean-spirited, parochial, arrogant, big-spending, irresponsible shambles of a party. We have to repudiate the party of Rove and Abramoff and Romney and Dobson and Cheney and Bush II. Burn it down and start over. –Glenn Reynolds: MCCAIN’S SPEECH: Not bad. But, like Obama, he was overshadowed ...

McCain's Speech...
The Discerning Texan — I have to say I agree with Glenn. Very vanilla and anticlimactic to me after last night, but I don't think he was shooting for my vote tonight. My vote was earned last night. He was going for another audience: ...

McCain’s Speech & His Sense of Gratitude
GayPatriot — ... ’s John Hinderaker after the speech, he thought the conversational style might be more effective that something which had us stomping our feet and pumping our fists. “This,” he said “was not a speech that was pitched to political sophisticates at all. It was aimed at the middle.“ ...
