We need government spending to create jobs and expand (or at least mitigate the contraction) of our economy. Government is the only player in our society which will act in the interests of the society at large- it has no profit motive, it can spend at a time when businesses and individuals are sitting on what little they have.
We have a crisis and some are supposedly worried that this neccessary government spending will be wasteful... we're screwed:
