A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days — James Bacchus reminds Democrats that if they really want to stimulate the economy, they should pay attention to promoting trade liberalization. This advice will fall on deaf ears, it would seem. Democrats aren't exactly high on free trade, for reasons that have been discussed at length and have to do with a combination of the political attractions of economic populism and nationalism and some plain, old-fashioned ignorance.
