Michael Steele and the Victory of Grassroots Over Gatekeepers
The Next Right —
My friend Matt Lewis blogs this morning that:
Unlike the Democrats, who in 2005 followed the lead of bloggers and elected Howard Dean chairman, the 168 members of the RNC seemed to pay little attention to the concerns of conservative bloggers, who were among Steele's harshest critics. But while Steele clearly didn't need the support of bloggers to become RNC chairman, he certainly can not afford to alienate them if he hopes to be deemed a successful chairman (where the support of 168 insiders will matter much less than the support of bloggers).

Daily Digest: What Progressives Want (and What They Should)
techPresident —
Should the Left Root for an Organizing for America Collapse?: One of the hottest questions in participatory politics right now has to do with the future of Organizing for America, the DNC-housed organization that evolved out of the Obama campaign. It's a discussion happening on techPresident. Is OFA a president-centric monolith that rips agency and authority from the grassroots, reaching around the mainstream press to direct followers on how to pass and promote an agenda they did nothing to create? Or can OFA be a loose and nimble people-powered vehicle for expression by a hyper-engaged citizenry? Zephyr ...
2/2: First Geithner, Now Daschle?
Blogometer —
February 02, 2009 2/2: First Geithner, Now Daschle? Liberal bloggers were outraged by the news that Barack Obama 's nominee for HHS Sec., ex-Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD), failed to pay more than $128K in taxes. Lefty bloggers are complaining that Daschle "embodies everything that is sleazy, sickly, and soul-less about Washington" and are describing his actions as "impossible to defend." A number of liberal bloggers are calling on Obama to withdraw Daschle's nomination, and some are floating ex-DNC Chair Howard Dean 's name as a potential replacement. However, others argue that Dean ...
