I have to cast my lot with my colleague Katherine, here. Opponents of restrictions on campaign contributions often try to stake out a middle ground by putting an emphasis on mass disclosure of contributors. I’m troubled by that. The ability to criticize the government with anonymity is a pretty critical component of free speech, if only because for much of human history, criticizing the people who ruled you could well get you killed. Remember, it was anonymous pamphleteers that sowed the seeds of the American Revolution.
