Transparency vs. Anonymity

Opponents of restrictions on campaign contributions often try to stake out a middle ground by putting an emphasis on mass disclosure of contributors. I’m troubled by that. The ability to criticize the government with anonymity is a pretty critical component of free speech, if only because for much of human history, criticizing the people who ruled you could well get you killed.
