Peta No. It's not the end of the world. What it is is the end of a democracy and the start of a cult
Congratulations to President Elect Barack H. Obama
A Blog For All —
... points out that history has a way of pushing people in unexpected directions. Obama will be facing many a challenge and will have his moments of surprise and disappointment - as will anyone filling the Office of the President. We can only hope that he has more moments of greatness than disappointment. UPDATE: Steve Den Beste has a very thought provoking post on what Obama's ascension to the Presidency will mean. The key grafs: The President of the United States is the most powerful political figure in the world, but as national executives go his powers are actually quite ...
Good Things About an Obama Administration

... of the office of President: the military, the federal bureaucracy, and foreign policy. The powers and responsibilities of the presidency in things like health care, education, and economic policy are actually pretty much limited to enforcing the law. The real responsibility in those areas belongs to the Congress, however reluctant its members are to shoulder it.
So far the most amusing thing I’ve read about what would be good about an Obama Administration comes from Steven Den Beste:

How badly did McCain underperform Bush? Ouch.
A very nice post from Beldar on the election of Obama.
It's not the end of the world.
Why McCain lost. If nothing else, I hope this election ends open primaries.
Your Post-Election Must Read
Ace of Spades HQ —
Your Post-Election Must Read Steven Den Beste . And now they're bound to be disappointed. Not even Jesus could satisfy all the expectations of Obama's most vocal supporters, or fulfill all the promises Obama has made. I think Obama is going to turn out to be the worst president since Carter, and for the same reason: good intentions do not guarantee good results. Idealists often stub their toes on the wayward rocks of reality, and fall on their faces. And the world doesn't respond to benign behavior benignly. But there's another reason why: Obama has been hiding his light under ...

... hope that he may do what is best for this great country of ours. I do not wish – I do not ever wish – to see my country suffer so that I may gain political leverage. If at this same time four years from now, President Obama has acted in such a way to make us more prosperous, more safe and more free, it will be my greatest pleasure to admit I was wrong about the man. I look forward to that day. I hope to see it come to pass.
And Steven Den Beste - yay!!! - has predictions.

Upside?
The Discerning Texan —
Many thanks to Steven den Beste (via Glenn Reynolds) for making today just a tiny bit brighter than was last night. Yes, there is much to be concerned about (like where to put my 401K money so that the government can't confiscate it...). But there is a lot of wisdom herein: I think this election is going to be a "coming of age" moment for a lot of people. They say, "Be careful what you wish for" and a lot of people got their wish yesterday. And now they're bound to be disappointed. Not even Jesus could ...

Can the Obamessiah Live Up To All The Expectations?
Stop The ACLU —
Absolutely not is the answer! Steven Den Beste says that even Jesus couldn’t live up to all the expectations Obama has set! And now they’re bound to be disappointed. Not even Jesus could satisfy all the expectations of Obama’s most vocal supporters, or fulfill all the promises Obama has made. I think Obama is going to turn out to be the worst president since Carter, and for the same reason: good intentions do not guarantee good results. ... Obama/Pelosi/Reid troika definitely have major agenda items that they'll want to get to. But they'll have to pick their battles. Even Dems in Congress have to be careful what they sign on for because anything that flops will come back to haunt them. By and large, these men and women are politicians first. And protecting their all-important hides is their overriding priority. But they need some bones to throw. So they'll get to work right away, before Obama is even sworn in. Here's a fellow MuNuvian (or is it MeeNeevian now?) who makes a good point: "Idealists often stub their ...

STEVEN DEN BESTE PREDICTS: 2008-2012
Bad Example —
STEVEN DEN BESTE PREDICTS: 2008-2012 I'm posting a copy of the predictions Steven posted at Chizumatic , because I want to look back in 2012 and see how many came true, and I don't want to take the chance that he'll delete his blog between now and then. I suspect (and dread) that he may run the table: 1. Obama's "hold out your hand to everyone" foreign policy is going to be a catastrophe. They'll love it in Europe. They're probably laughing their heads off about it in the middle east already. 2. The US hasn't suffered a terrorist attack by al Qaeda since 9/11, but we'll get ...
Den Beste: the sun will shine tomorrow, even if it rains
Belmont Club —
Steven Den Beste makes predictions about an Obama Presidency, but adds, chill, it’s not the end of the world. “I’m not saying I’m happy with this outcome. I would much rather have had McCain win. But this is not the end of the world, or the end of this nation. We’ve survived much worse.” He’s right about the world continuing to turn. But here are SDB’s predictions. Now, a few predictions for the next four years: 1. Obama’s “hold out your hand to everyone” foreign policy is going to be a catastrophe. They’ll love it in Europe. They’re probably laughing their heads off about it ...

Not The End Of The World
Riehl World View —
Steven Den Beste offers up why "it's not the end of the world."
I agree in some large part, but not completely. Obama is a smart guy and will have one eye on 2012 from the start. It's only a second term that would give him the free hand he might want. I also think the office of the presidency can have a transformative effect on an individual.
Time will tell but Obama may not prove to be the Leftist many fear, at least not in a first term. What I can't wait to hear or read is the first black activist who tells us that because Obama doesn't give ...
Electing a Scary Black Man President Isn't the End of the World
Jon Swift —
... Obama will probably really screw things up (I mean, worse than they already are). It’s not too idealistic to believe he could turn out to be a hopelessly incompetent President, maybe the worst this country has ever seen, and completely run America into the ground. We can already take solace in the fact that Obama has so much to live up to that it will be impossible for him to succeed. “Disillusionment will turn to a feeling of betrayal. And that will, in turn, convert to anger,” wrote Steven Den Beste hopefully. “Our mission for the next four years is to be in opposition ...
