The effects of the abortion 'compromise'
Political Animal —
... and negotiations, the biggest hurdle was the wording on a measure dealing with the fungibility of public funds as it relates to abortion services. Pro-choice Democrats said the bill already restricted direct public funding of abortion. Democrats who oppose abortion rights said it wasn't enough, and without a prohibition on indirect funding, they would kill the entire health care reform initiative. Late last night, the House leadership agreed to let opponents of abortion rights bring an amendment to the floor . Anti-abortion Democrats will be allowed to offer an amendment ...
Selling Out Women’s Civil Rights
Taylor Marsh —
... Pres. Obama opened the door to sell us out when he decided to put the Hyde Amendment in the budget, something Bill Clinton never did. But Mr. Obama didn’t stop there. During the stimulus fight, at the first sign of displeasure, our President personally asked that contraceptives be taken out. Now the President seems ready to finish the job, with Democrats poised to help him do it.

Anti-Abortion Democrats Betraying Women Once Again
Delaware Liberal —
Conservatives say they want to get government out of our lives and don’t want “government bureaucrats” standing in the way of the relationship between doctors and patients. Unless, of course, you’re a woman then the pregnancy-is-punishment lobby is only too happy to tell you what to do. Democratic leaders in the House have caved to anti-abortion zealouts led by Bart Stupak (D-MI) and will allow them to offer an amendment to restrict abortion even more than it’s already restricted: Anti-abortion Democrats will be allowed to offer an amendment during the House health care debate ...

Health care “reform” goes to vote in the House
Sister Toldjah —
... After an appearance by our celebrity President earlier today and intense lobbying efforts by his admininstration, the House will vote later today on the mammoth health care “reform” bill that has become the centerpiece of President Obama’s first year agenda. Do Democrats have the votes? Maybe, but on the Republican side of things ...
Dems "have the votes" in House; anti-abortion Stupak Amendment passes
The Reaction —
... As CNN is reporting, the awful Stupak Amendment passed 240-194 earlier this evening. It "bans federal funds for abortion services in the public option and in the insurance 'exchange' the bill would create." This is the trade-off for securing 218 votes, as it pulls in anti-abortion Dems, but it's a bitter pill to swallow. Lest we forget, after all, abortion is legal, and what this amendment means is that millions of women, most of whom don't have the resources to buy expensive, high-end private insurance, will be cut off from abortion as an option. But who care about the ...
House Votes to Seize Control Of Your Health Care
Boots and Sabers —
... Start bribing your local health commissar now to get your ration card . The House of Representatives on Saturday night passed a sweeping health care bill by a vote of 220-215. Seriously, is there anyone who thinks it’s good governance to take over one-sixth of the economy and radically change Americans’ relationship with their government on a partisan vote with a tiny margin? Taylor Marsh: In Pelosi's House, 64 Democrats Sell Women Out
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com —
The first female Speaker of the House makes history by passing a health care bill that not only doesn't have a robust public option, but also sells out women's civil rights. The Republicans acted reprehensibly today, heckling women lawmakers like the chamber was a frat house. Think Progress has that story. But in the end the Stupak amendment passed, 240 yeas, 194 nays, 1 present, with the names of Dems who voted for it totaling 64; the health care bill passing 220 yeas, 215 nays. Now it's up to the Senate and the conference, because if the Stupak amendment is in the final bill it will be a setback of monumental proportions for women. ...

Getting the job gone
Infidel753 —
The House of Representatives has passed a health-care reform bill with a public option (link sent by Ranch Chimp). The far more difficult task of getting something worthwhile through the Senate still lies ahead, but still, this is an achievement to celebrate. It's not perfect. It will supposedly extend coverage to 96% of Americans (so we still can't simply cover all citizens like every other developed nation does). Abortion coverage is restricted to satisfy a passel of conservative Democrats. But it's far better than what we have now. ...

The Stupak amendment, the greatest rollback of rights for women in decades is now in that thing the House has been calling a "Health Care" bill. ... no new taxes." When President Bush later agreed to raise taxes as part of the 1990 budget negotiations, he wrecked his re-election chances and became a one-termer. In September, 2008, candidate Obama promised, "I can make this firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making $250,000 will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes." Oops. Newsweek's Clift Laments Impact of Pro-life Democrats on Health Care Bill
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias —
... When health-care reform passed the House by just two votes late Saturday night, I assumed Speaker Nancy Pelosi had several more votes in her pocket from Blue Dogs who would be there if she needed them. After all, that's how Washington works. I also figured I shouldn't get too worked up about the restrictive amendment on abortion that was added at the last minute because it would be stripped from the legislation when it went to conference and was merged with the Senate bill. ...
