Obama dining with conservatives?

It's not like he's letting Limbaugh hold the Bible. (Is he?) I don't necessarily have a problem with this. I suspect Brooks is the only one even possibly movable, and Limbaugh and Kristol are simply treacherous. Still, it's an interesting move. Oh, I say Limbaugh because he's rumored to be part of the posse. Here's the pool report: Pool Report #4 1-13-09 Hay-Adams to George Will's house The PEOTUS departed Hay-Adams at 6:17 p.m. and at arrived at 6:34 p.m. at No. 9 Grafton St., Chevy Chase (right off the circle). Obama's at George Will's house, at a dinner party, with Billy Kristol, David Brooks, Charles Krauthammer, and possibly Rush Limbaugh! So much for the secret liberal theory. (Unless the secret liberal is putting something in the rightwingers' brandy.) So when is the President-elect dining with Paul Krugman, Helen Thomas, Amy Goodman and Noam Chomsky??? Pool report: The PEOTUS departed Hay-Adams at 6:17 p.m. and at arrived at 6:34 p.m. at No. 9 Grafton St., Chevy Chase (right off the circle). Thanks to the good work of Hans Nichols (of Bloomberg and "Daily Show" fame), Montgomery County property tax records showed this is the home of conservative columnist George Will (valued at $1.9 million, according to the 2008 levy). We're still awaiting confirmation that this is indeed Will's house from the transition, but your pool is satisfied with the documentation. Your pool has been told it's a ...

The dinner party was not a photo op, nor an announced event as the only way it was figured out that it was Will’s house was by looking up property tax records, and the identities of the dinner guests were ascertained via a photo through a window. The whole thing, from a reporting standpoint, is more paparazzi than White House Press Corps, but oh well.
This is interesting, if anything, because it strikes me as a noteworthy attempt at civility on the part of the president-elect. Now, I know ...

... , the others don't matter. In a sense, he's using that tried-and-true strategy with Rush). Even so, I suspect that Obama's courtship of political commentators has an even deeper strategy behind it. He intends to deepen and widen the fissures in the Republican Party that were exposed by the nomination fo Sarah Palin to the vice-presidency. Unlike the Democrats, division in the GOP isn't primarily ideological (everyone basically agrees: Strong national defense, traditional social values, tax cuts, etc). Rather, it's stylistic, and to a degree, socio-economic. The tensions ...
