Obama Hits Back, Too Softly For Some
Barack Obama released a television advertisement yesterday that questions John McCain's claims to be a "maverick," and he charged in a campaign appearance that the Republican displays independence only when it suits him politically. Obama aides said Democratic hand-wringing about polls showing that the presidential race remains tight had nothing to do with the volleys. "We are not going ...

Obama Adviser: 'Celeb' Ads Hurt Him In Polls
The Huffington Post | Full News Feed — ... Times that the Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain was seeing a "short-term blip" as a result of the advertising, including one that used the image of Charlton Heston as Moses to mock the supposedly messianic Mr Obama as being "The One". "To a certain extent the ads are having some effect," Mr Daschle said. "But you can't be thrown off your game plan by a momentary dip in polls." Meanwhile, the Washington Post finds Democratic strategists worried that Obama's response has been too soft: Such attacks have raised ...

When will Obama hit back harder?
Jonathan Martin's Blog — Or will he at all? For now, it seems he's decided to counter-attack McCain with a mix of high-minded disappointed about low-road tactics and PG-rated messaging tying the Republican nominee to President Bush. But that's not enough for Democrats outside of Obama's orbit who fear yet another campaign where bare-knuckle GOP attacks are responded to with only an annoyed slap. Jonathan Weisman and Perry Bacon round up the sentiment, mostly delivered via blind quote, in a story today.   The Obama campaign, not surprisingly, dismisses the ...

Obama's Negative Ads
Swampland — If you're worried about Obama hitting back hard enough, look underneath the table. These two ads were put up in Pennsylvania and Ohio (I think.), minus the usual press release announcement. "Original" is mentioned in the WaPo article, though not the relatively quiet way it was released. Here's a fact-check on "Pocket," which ratchets down the amount of money given to McCain by "Big Oil" to a mere $1.3 million, rather than two. Whew. For awhile there I thought they had given him A LOT of money. I haven't seen one for "Original," though off the top of my head I'll note that the ...

A picture worth a thousand words
WTF Is It Now?!? — Seen at Brilliant at Breakfast: This reminds me -- I'm seeing more and more calls for Obama to fight back against McCain, and I have to agree. He's got to start, because unfortunately what people remember are the outrageous stuff -- you know, the sound bites the cable news whores play over and over and over again. I know that's all those idiots on CNN could talk about yesterday evening. They say "if it bleeds, it leads," and that's proving to be very true. Obama has to get out there and start kicking major ass. McCain sez that Obama fella's gonna take away all our possums!! Ah'm gonna vote for the ol' loon!

Tale of Headlines: Too Nice Obama Can't Escape McCain's Attacks
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias — The campaign news so far this month, as told via Washington Post stories on the tone on the campaign trail and in advertising: McCain “employs lowest common denominator,” Obama reacts “too softly for some” and yet gets “no vacation from McCain's attacks.” The headlines: ♦ Friday, August 1 “Analysis” by Howard Kurtz: “McCain's Ad Formula Employs Lowest Common Denominator” ♦ Thursday, August 7 front page news story by Jonathan Weisman and Perry Bacon Jr.: “Obama Hits Back, Too Softly for Some.” Headline on the jump page: “Some Backers Say a Tougher Obama Isn't Tough Enough” ♦ Saturday, August 9 article by Jonathan Weisman and Michael D. ...

Worries? What worries?
Swampland — First, a disclaimer: every Democratic member of Congress is absolutely committed to helping the U.S. economy recover and wishes that the down turn hadn’t happened. That said, the economic crisis couldn’t have come at a better time as far as a lot of Democrats are concerned. Last week Dems were ...
