Op-Ed Columnist - White Like Me
I cannot testify to what black Americans feel as our nation celebrates the inauguration of our first African-American president. But I can speak for myself, as a white American who grew up in the segregated nation’s capital of the 1960s. Barack Obama’s day is one that I never thought would come, ...

Your Abbreviated Pundit Round-Up
Daily Kos — Your one stop pundit shop. Maya Angelou is ready for "the real deal": Over the past five decades, our national spirit has ebbed, our self-confidence has waned. The presence of Barack Obama seems to return us to our national motto: "Yes, I can. I am an American." Will Ferrell talks about playing George W. Bush on Broadway. S.E. Cupp gives a young conservative's perspective on the soon-to-be inauguration of Barack Obama: None of my conservative friends -- in New York we all know each other, since there are roughly 14 of us -- plan to attend the ...

The Day Few Thought Would Come
Taegan Goddard's Political WireFrank Rich: "I cannot testify to what black Americans feel as our nation celebrates the inauguration of our first African-American president. America From The Roof Line
BAGnewsNotes — Seeing this NYT Obama "Freedom Train" roof shot on Saturday outside Claymont, Delaware, then reading Frank Rich's piece this weekend, detailing the intractability of urban problems, and specifically, the well-being of the 19% of D.C.'s population -- predominantly black ...and invisible -- living below the poverty line, I couldn't help but think of this visual analogy. If we've come so far, there still is so far to go. (image: Damon Winter/The New York Times. linked image: David J. Phillip. New Orleans. September 4, 2005)

Inauguration Day
Political Animal — INAUGURATION DAY.... I don't recall exactly when I started seeing "1.20.09" bumper stickers; I guess it was about a year ago. But it wasn't long before "1.20.09" was pretty much everywhere -- on cars, on shirts, on hats, online. And lo and behold, here it is. As Frank Rich noted the other day, "Barack Obama's day is one that I never thought would come, and one that I still can't quite believe is here." I know the feeling. In fact, I find myself in a slightly awkward position: slightly at a loss for words. In four hours, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th ...

1/20/09
Comments from Left Field — It’s safe to say that Frank Rich speaks for many Americans — and certainly for me — when he wrote in his column earlier this week that “Barack Obama’s day is one that I never thought would come, and one that I still can’t quite believe is here.” Rich was referring to the historic nature of Obama’s presidency, not to the relief of seeing the Bush years finally come to an end, but the comment works in both contexts. That’s why, for my money, the most powerful moment in the inauguration ceremony — even more powerful than Obama taking the oath of office — was when Pres. Obama and First Lady ...
